Does Drinking Alkalised Water Benefit Your Health And Wellbeing, Or Is It Just A Fad?

By Lisa McDonald, Strategic Life Management Coach

Consuming adequate water is an essential aspect of good health and wellbeing.  The body is between 50-75% water, depending on age, gender, body fat and other factors.  It’s essential for many body functions.

Drinking alkalised water helps you to hydrate and reduce acidity in your body.  For some people drinking alkalised water is just a fad, it’s something they do because they’ve discovered its trendy.  Like any fad, some people are quick to implement and then quick to stop.

However, if you’re really serious about your health and wellbeing then there’s a bit more to it.

Reducing acidity is important because the body is a finely tuned instrument.  It must keep its pH (measure of acidity/alkaline) within a very very narrow range in order to survive and function.  Even the tiniest change in pH level can create imbalances which stop the cells and metabolic processes functioning, quickly resulting in sickness and even death.  Disease thrives in an acidic body, which is why it has mechanisms to detect and address threats quickly in order for you to survive.  Two ways the body reduces acidity include breathing it out with CO2 and using calcium.

In modern society it’s more likely that you’re body will be too acidic rather than too alkaline. So if you’re serious about alkalising your body, rather than just following a fad, then there’s other dietary and lifestyle factors to consider.

There’s all the common culprits which make your body acidic that you’re likely to be aware of like sugar, caffeine, alcohol.  And here are just a few that you may not be aware of:

  • Meats, nuts, grains, processed foods …
  • Stress, anxiety, negative thinking
  • Exercise

If you want to help to balance your body and reduce acidity in the body, here’s a couple of easy ways:

  • Reduce or eliminate sugar, caffeine, alcohol
  • Start the day with a big glass of water and a freshly squeezed lemon
  • Eat lots of fresh, green leafy vegetables
  • Snack on raw unsalted almonds
  • A brisk walk each day to eliminate acid waste products in the body

Remember, if alkalising your body is not just a fad, and you’re serious about better health and wellbeing outcomes, then consider drinking alkalised water as part of the bigger picture of your health and wellbeing.
